Boy..taking off thursday morning for the "BATTLE OF THE MODIFIEDS" at Kentucky I had no idea what I was in for............. it has to be my third favorite race of all time.... my first was by far the first time I went to Eldora...........the second was when Chad Kinder won at Eldora.........and this race this weekend... The caliber of drivers there was amazing!!!! Everywhere you looked was a great driver....

We got to the track around 12:30 and pulled in right behind KOHL who puts pictures on our site....I saw my sticker in his back window..... thankyou Kohl..... was nice meeting you.... with you being in the infield and me being in the pit we never ran into one another again.......

We parked our camper and set it up..........shortly after we arrived JERRY AND PAM HUDDLESTON pulled in...we got together and went to get our tickets and head to the bleachers to put our seats and blankets down.....
I decided not to go to the pit area today for interviews so to stay out of the way of the drivers who were arriving...
We went in to say hello to Team #22 and then went back to camper...........parked in front of us was MARTY HISER #23m from Argenta, Illinois.... I got an interview with him......when I found he was from Argenta I asked him if he knew the "Askrins" and he said he sure did.... he told me after Lee died he mowed the lawn for Georgie............geez...small world.... I told him that Georgie was my aunt, sister to my mother.... Was really nice to meet Marty and his family.....
Around 4 pm JB and Becky Robinson pulled in with their motor home and parked by us...parents of KENT ROBINSON #7r.......
Well race time was getting close so we went and put on warmer clothes and headed to our seats...
the cars started hot lapping..........man oh man......there were 49 late model there and 107 modified..
I saw late model drivers Terry and Tanner English...Jeff Walston...BJ McCammon, Sellars...Rodney Melvin...Frank Heckenast,jr and many more...
In modified there were drivers from all over...........they announced that there were fifteen states plus Canada represented there today.... ... there were USMTS drivers as well as Wissota drivers....they are always a thrill to watch.... I saw Jason Hughes who I had met in Florida, Corey Dripps, Kelly Shryock, Ed Shamhart, Denny and Danny Schwartz, Shon Flanery, Kent Robinson, Brian Shaw, Ricky Waggoner,Gary Cook,jr , Scott Weber, Mike Harrison and of course Chad Kinder.... you knew we were in for a good weekend !!
Wow.....the racing was great..... the track was rough thursday but I am telling you...Sherri was working that track...... friday it was choppy but better and saturday it looked pretty good......
The late model drivers put on a good show.....Terry English never disappoints me....He had it together all weekend taking all three shows............WAY TO GO TERRY....
BJ McCammon was there in the famous "92" late model...... it is nice to see a McCammon back on the track since Doug McCammon retired...... BJ told me that this weekend was the third time he had the car out..... BJ has started his own company in Danville called RaceCo..... I will have more info on here soon... I believe his fiance will give us some info...
The heats were won by Kenny Schrader, Brian Barbee , Peyton Taylor and Thompson
Top four to advance to the feature from the two b mains were: #75, Jeff Walston, #41 and Tanner English........(BJ McCammon finished 5th)......second b main the ones to make it were Terry Babb, Jeff Sloan, Ryan Little and Sellars...
Feature winner was Terry English and Peyton Taylor crossed over 2nd, Schrader 3rd, Cole 4th and BJ McCammon 5th....

In the modified there were ten heats and 4 B Mains........ I am not even going to try to understand the point system...........the more I ask the more confused I get...... I did talk to a USMTS driver who races on the points system all the time.... .he said he likes the system...but he said he felt there were too many cars in this show for it to work............
Heat winners were Mike Spatola, Tommy Weeder,jr, Bobby Martintoni, Dave Cain, Steve Arpin, Kenny Wallace, Kelly Shryock,Jason Hughes, Kenny Schrader and Chad Kinder....
There were 4 B Mains with two advancing to the feature...
1..Jason Hughes and Corey Dripps.........2..Chad Kinder and Kevin Weaver....3..#8x and Jess Hartman......4..Greg Johnson and Danny Schwartz....***there was a mess up on first B Main when only half the field was sent out on track for race so they had the second half race with one advancing to the feature....the winner was Ronnie Short..
In the feature Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader started on the front row.....
Dave Cain came from the 11th spot to pass Kenny Wallace for the win..Shryock who started in 12th crossed over third and Chad Kinder came all the way up from 18th to take 4th...Corey Dripps came from 21st to finish 5th............WHAT A RACE !!!!!!!
The weather was great for racing.... I wore shorts during the day and changed to jeans and a long sleeve shirt for night time... I did add a sweatshirt and hubby turned on the heater but we were comfortable....... we went back to the camper to get rested for the friday adventure...........
Talked with Marty Hiser briefly...he told me he was having some mechanical issues.... I talked with his mother and then headed to the trailer....

Friday, October 12th.....

Today my goal was to get as many interviews as I could..... I had several on my list to find.... Claycomb, Miles, Patick, Houston, Cobb, Elliott, Coakley, Logue, Dripps, Cain, Arpin and Mike Sweeney.......... I always have big plans...but I just love to talk so much rolleyes.gif ... takes me longer to get through the pit area.....I love it !!!! Needless to say I did not get as many as I wanted .........
About one Mark, Gennie and Jenna Bare arrived... they were staying at the MicroMotel close by.... I headed to the pit area and ran into a Crew Member of Matt Mevert's........Matt was not racing but Larry was there helping Kevin Weaver.... always nice talking with Larry...
I went into the pit area and started making the rounds............. I went to Chad Kinder's pit area first to say hello to the boys and wish Chad luck for tonight..... pitted right next to him was Corey Dripps...the #31 USMTS driver.........man.... what a charactor !!! ohmy.gif blink.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif .... His interview will be quite interesting rolleyes.gif ..Was really fun to talk with........ and with our conversation can you believe I forgot to take a picture of him with his car.... ME BAD.... but I did get his picture and one of his famous SHIRT....
Next I went to the Terry English pit area and asked where Tanner was............ you know...when you watch these cars you get an image of what you think the driver looks like....... Tanner is only 14 years old and has very good manners..... he is gonna be just like his dad .... I look for Tanner to be around a long time.... great kid..... next I got an interview with the #d8 of Dustin Linville... another young kid ..he was 16...and again...very sweet and easy to interview.... I met his dad and his uncle who you could tell are very proud of him...
The next car I came upon was the #00x ............ I asked to see if the driver was there and he said right here..... I asked his name and found it was Steve Arpin.........what a cutie .....and sorry girls ...but he has a very pretty fiance Trina.......** ohmy.gif who also helps him work on the car....... they are such a cute couple...I have seen Steve race in Florida and at the USMTS races that I have attended..... very nice kid of 23.....
Next I found Dave Cain, a Wissota driver who had won the thursday night race for $5000.....was really glad to get to meet him....was fun to interview as well......
Next I came up on the #156 car of Steve Pugh... he hails from Texas.........was nice to meet him as well...
On my way around to the next aisle I ran into Gary Cook,jr.......he told me he had started the chase for the points out really on a high this year and then after having motor problems .....and I believe he told me he had went through four engines......... well friday was no better.... he blew the engine again...... He told me he would be running the #10r of Curt Rhodes tonight because yesterday Curt had his finger broken from a flying rock out on the track.... Gary showed me a picture of the cute little girl he adopted a couple of years ago...she is two.... and showed me a picture of his six year old son who has started racing quarter midgets.. Boy you can sure see the pride when Gary was talking about him... He said Dawson races at Taylorville and at Lincoln.... I am hoping he will put his results on the site next season..... He said that when Dawson won a race this year coming around to checker flag he stuck his hand out the window and gave the crowd a winner's shake.............. Gary said it brought tears to his eyes....... hmmm do you think one of these days we may be seeing Dawson in a modified?????
Next I ran into Robbie McClane..the #20 modified from Hot Springs , Ark... had a nice time interviewing him..he has a real good attitude about racing.... he says he doesn't take it serious... just a good stress release for him and he loves to do it...
I then ran into the #56 of Jeff Walston..........who also runs a crate..... he is from the Paducah area... very nice to meet and interview...
The last to interview was Mike Hammerlee.... he is 59 years old.... has been around the racing scene since age 21....wish I had time to talk more with him... I am sure he is full of stories.....
I went by Justin HOuston but he was not there........and I never found him saturday.... he was not parked in the same place..... I never could find Kyle Logue either..... I ran into Kevin Claycomb and told him I would like an interview when he was free but never ran into him again.....
I talked with Sherri and she said she would come by my camper saturday morning so we could do the interview...... she is one busy lady...
I went back to the camper and got ready for the evening race.... once we got set up and the hot laps were starting I went down and got some pictures as they were lining up to go on the track..... saw Ricky Waggoner in the line up and he hollared at me...invited me to his pit area...
Heat races were won by Kevin Weaver, Peyton Taylor, Kyle Brown, Kenny Wallace, Dave Cain,Tommy Weeder,jr, Eric Bruce, Shelby Miles, Shon Flanery and Corey Dripps..........
top two to advance to the feature from B Mains were........1..Denny Schwartz and Jeff Parks.....2..Chad Kinder and Brent Mullins....3..Kenny Schrader and Kent Robinson....4..#5 and Trent DeYoung....
The feature was great...Corey Dripps won the feature coming from 10th..Kelly Shryock finished 2nd coming from 5th .. Chad Kinder came from 18th to finish 9th.......
Drivers to make both thursday and friday features were Spatola, Weber, Shryock, Miles, Flanery, Weaver, Dripps, Arpin, Wallace, Cain, Hughes, Kinder and Schrader....

I tried to get an interview with Kevin Claycomb but he was busy..... Talked with Danny Claycomb....I went by the Robinson pit area and talked with JB and his daughter Bethany..... love talking to this family.....
I had went to the Robinson's motor home earlier and heard an interesting story from Kent Robinson.....I don't think he will ever trust Chad Kinder again... lol... laugh.gif
I talked with Greg Johnson for a short time.... told him I could not get use to seeing him in a modified... he said he was having a lot of fun driving it but still prefers late model....
I then returned to the camper to get ready for the races tonight...........Gennie , Jenna and I started walking to the grandstands and Kent Robinson came by with his golf cart and took us......THANKYOU KENT!!! It sure did help............that was a long walk............

In the feature the front row was Greg Johnson and Randle Sweeney...2nd row was Weeder and Arpin..3rd row was Shryock and Herbert...........
The #2 of Greg Johnson got out to an early lead only to pull off the track on first caution in lap 1 for Steve Picou.......on lap 3 the #182 of Sweeney spun out...leaves the track.......
Weeder is out in front with Arpin, Shryock, Dripps, Herbert , Patrick, Hughes, Schrader, Shaw Hartman, Kinder , and DeYoung...........etc..
caution 3 came out for Shryock who breaks down.......he goes off.........by lap 14 Weeder is leading with Arpin, Dripps, and Kinder has come all the way up from 17th...... by lap 20 Kinder is in 3rd...Herbert goes off..........by lap 25 it is Arpin in the lead with Weeder then Kinder then Dripps....with 28 laps in Chad takes 2nd from Weeder......................on the last lap Chad Kinder passes for the win.....!!!!!!! WAY TO GO CHAD KINDER........................... some where along the line I got up out of my seat and stood up on landing...by the time Chad had crossed the line for the checkered flag I was two sections past where I started and Gennie was nearly crying............... We were quite happy...........the announcer noted that Kinder had a large group of fans !!!!!!!
Was good to see him in Winner's Circle having pictures taken, getting a very large trophy and collecting his vinyl check...................................
We all went down to the pit area to congratulate Chad..... needless to say the crew was very happy !!!!!
