Danny Eichler is 58 years old and lives in Indianapolis , Indiana
Danny retired from racing in 1997 after a 40+ year career ...... He is now the car owner of JD Largent....
Danny told me that he had claimed Lawrenceburg as his hometrack but he had traveled to a lot of other tracks over his career... He mentioned Liberty Union Co....Flornece, Ky....Eldora and Great Falls Montana...
Out of all the tracks that he raced he favored Lawrenceburg....
Danny told me that he has raced Stock cars, super dirt cars, late models, and modified.... His favorite to run was the Late Model....
He started out racing at the age of 6 in go carts then at 16 in the 6 cylinder cars.....He stopped racing while he served his country in the Air Force....when he returned home he started racing again around 1966....
He went into the Super 6 Class which was like a late model first year home...
I asked Danny what had inspired him to start racing and he said it was because of his dad...
The drivers that he most admired were and are Floyd Gilbert (late model)...Jeff Harris and JD Largent...
He said his toughest competitor was JD Largent when he raced modifieds...
I asked Danny what he thought it took to be a good driver he told me patience...and added....you need to be ready..be prepared for when your fellow driver makes a mistake or error..gotta be ready to take advantage of it....... he said you have to know what your car is capable of doing that night as well...if you have a 3rd place car...then drive it like a 3rd place car.....
When I asked him if he thought there was anything in racing that needed to be changed he told me yes... that they needed to hold down the cost of the engines.... He said he liked the idea of the crate engines for the modified....
Racing highlights........WOW.... I know there were more but these are the ones he named right off the top of his head....
First year back from the Air Force he was track champion......he has over 20 different track championships... had two track championships for the stock car division at Eldora.....in his career he made the World 100 3 times and his best finish was 4th... 7 time champ at Union Co..
And when he raced go carts he said he had over 300 wins in two different classes....
He told me he like running the high groove and on a tacky track.....
Danny it was so nice talking with you.... I know you had a lot more stories you could have shared with me.... I loved talking with you..... Talking with JD Largent I could see how much he respects you...
The two of you have a very good owner/driver relationship....
