Jones wins sprint-car Driver of the Year
By Justin Hatten

Olney's Levi Jones was recently voted the 2005 “Driver of the Year” by the North American Non-Winged Sprint Car Poll voting panel at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa.

The panel consists of various media members, sanctioning officials, promoters and manufacturers. The 23-year-old recently- crowned 2005 USAC National Sprint Car champion earned eight of the 15 first-place ballots that are cast in the year-end poll. Jones' car owner, Scott Benic, of Fairmount, Ind., was also given the 2005 “Team of the Year” award for the performance of his Lucas Oil/2B Racing sprint-car team.

Jones, who finished with 1,050 points in the voting, and his 2B Racing Team beat out a stellar field of the finest sprint-car drivers in the country to win the prestigious award. This was a season to remember for Jones and his team as they found victory lane 12 times in sprint-car competition. He rolled off five USAC Sprint Car victories and earned the Earl's Fast Qualifier Award for the second year in a row with five fast times, including two track records.

He captured three USAC victories at the famed Terre Haute Action Track, winning the “Jan Opperman Memorial” in July and sweeping the two-night “Tony Hulman Fall Harvest Classic” this fall. Jones also won the prestigious “Four-Crown Nationals” at the historic Eldora Speedway in Western Ohio in September, where he blistered the track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.750

Jones and his 2B team dominated the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour N' Topless series in August, winning four of six races, including the $30,000 to win Ultimate Challenge at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Jones also scored a weekly sprint-car win at Gas City Speedway in Indiana and an MSCS/KISS series event at Terre Haute over Fourth of July weekend. He won the inaugural “Fireman's 50” at Kokomo Speedway in Indiana.

Jones competed in 55 races in 2005 and made the main event in 53 of those races. He finished in the top five 33 times and the top 10 40 times.

Levi JOnes is 26 years old and single.. He was raised in Olney, Illinois but now calls home Brownsburg, Indiana..

Levi runs the #20 sprint for Tony Stewart.... Tonight he was running his own car..the #2..
His #2 car has a Maxim chassi and a Claxton Engine..

He considers no track a hometrack because he travels all over the country...
His favorite track to run is the Action Track in Terre Haute, Indiana..

Levi told me that he started racing go carts at age 5 and started racing mini sprints at age 14..

I asked what had inspired him to start racing and I was told that he had been going to Haubstadt to watch racing since he was a little kid....

And that folks is all I got........he was first up for heat laps and had to leave...I did try to catch him later but could not catch him when he seemed to want to talk...
